I just glanced at an essay on what motivates some famous writers to write. From Margaret Atwood to the late Ray Bradbury, everyone gave a sort of convoluted, emotional, if not pie in the sky answer that made me laugh. Out of seven or so authors, not one of them mentioned what should be their primary motivation: Fun.
Agreed, writing should absolutely be fun. I think there's this romantic notion of the tortured artist, that we all have to suffer to create art. In reality, or at least in my case and I sure as hell don't speak for everyone, the suffering came first and the writing eases it, haha! It's a release. I have fun playing with my imaginary friends. I have fun with language. It's fun hallucinating onto paper and cheaper than drugs.
