There was another concrete shaft located at the end of the tunnel. I was the first one to make my way up the metal ladder where I unlatched the metal trap door and carefully opened it up. Like a tentative, midwinter groundhog, I gradually raised up my head, poking it through the opening.

It turns out that there was nothing to be afraid of.

Other than a landscape of tin, one-story structures, the area was abandoned. Just to be on the safe side, I drew my weapon before exposing myself entirely.

“Wait until I give you the okay, Scully,” I said, stepping on up through the opening. I took a quick look around. I was standing in the middle of two long rows of tin storage units. To my right, where the units came to an end, was a road that ran perpendicular to the blacktop access-way I was standing on. To the left, where the units came to an end, was the Hudson River.

“Real estate must be pretty cheap up here for them to put storage units on it,” I whispered to myself. Then, “It’s okay, Scully, you can come up.”

She did.

“It’s like a storage container ghost town,” she said, crossing her arms over her chest to keep warm. “Do you have the key?”
