This is true. It’s fun. Like painting or playing an instrument (I also do the latter).
But it is legitimate means of making a living. Therefore I am a professional writer who is currently building a career and has been for many years.
I recall my dad once saying, Vince doesn’t want to work for a living. This was when I was graduating from writing school.
When I got married (for the second time) a few years later and on the back of a major NYC publishing deal that went more or less south when sales were “humble,” my in-laws were insanely angry that I wouldn’t get a real job. Sorry but I came into this a writer and a writer I will remain. That marriage failed.
But I moved back in some years later when I was once again making lots of money in advances and royalties (you see how that happens).
This time, while I was recognized as a professional writer, it still wasn’t considered a job. It was, Since you’re home, can you wash and dry the laundry? Can you pick up so and so from school? Can you make us dinner at five?
Okay, I get it. I work from home on the dining room table.
The dining room table. Once, the then sig other threatened to smash my laptop against the wall if she found it on the dining room table one more time. She was really angry and it was disconcerting. Funny how she didn’t mind my spending advance and royalty money on trips to Italy and Paris.
Then there’s the “all you want to do is write.”
Or the “It’s the most important thing to you.”
It is one of the most important things to me. It’s not only how I make my living. It’s my passion. I’m not sorry that some people who’ve come and gone in my life don’t see it as a job.
But I am sorry that they’ve felt so threatened by it.
