Write and Publish Only for Yourself!
I’m still addressing the dreadfully misleading PW article on the 10 Things Nobody Tells You About the Publishing Industry.
In it’s Item 2, the article deals with how an author doesn’t just have to convince an acquiring editor to buy a book. He or she must convince an entire team or teams of people to buy the book.
Fair enough. Been through that publishing song and dance before.
But the author’s advice is awful.
In fact, it’s especially dangerous for authors: "conceptualize projects with multiple stakeholders in mind."
Utter nonsense, and it could lead to a lot of author confusion and needless frustration.
Simply put, write the novel you want to write, how you want to write it, when you want to write it.
Never write anything with anyone in mind but yourself. Full stop.
