Use Current Events
Sometimes it’s fun to use current events in your crime fiction.
Case and point. When the defund the cops faction started talking about replacing cops with social workers, especially when it came to investigating in-progress domestic disputes, I knew I had a story in the making.
Imagine the danger and the absurdity of this notion.
Being a crime writer, I naturally know a lot cops. I’m especially close to one of them who is high up on the New York State law enforcement ladder. She is a 34 year veteran, and trust me when I tell you she’s seen it all, from dude’s who’ve gotten run over by trains, to suicides, to beheadings, to shootings, you name it.
She also told me there is perhaps no more dangerous situation for a cop to enter than a domestic dispute, especially when there’s firearms and booze/drugs involved, which there all too often are.
That said, I wrote a 5,000 word story called, well, Domestic Dispute. It’s a way for me to use current events in my fiction without being overtly political, but still making a point, and above all, having fun.
