Total Control
About 4 years ago or so I was doing a reading in New York City at a Noir At The Bar from my hot-off-the-printing-press thriller, Orchard Grove. As always when I do a reading, I simply start at page one and finish when my time is up.
It was a packed house with a stellar lineup of hard-boiled authors. I was proud to be among them. Even my then significant other and daughter were in the audience.
As I began to read, all was seemingly going well. I was confident in the prose and the look of the new hardcover book was beautiful. It had been distributed well all over the country too.
But then disaster struck. I began to notice typos in the copy. Not just one typo, but many. Even the word “the” was repeated twice in one sentence on page 2!
Naturally I read around these mistakes, but I was mortified by the errors. I also couldn’t understand how the publisher, a relatively new but industry celebrated one, could allow such a product to go to market.
Fast forward a few years and now I have something like 80 IPs with my company Bear media. It’s indie publishing at it’s best because I have total control over the product. If there’s typos, they can be fixed at any time. If there’s a problem with the cover, it can be replaced. If the layout isn’t quite right, it can be improved.
In indie publishing, there’s no end to the control you have over your books.
I publish traditionally and independently, but lately, indie publishing has been drawing me in like a bright light at the end of a really long tunnel.
