Need an Agent to Sell Your Words?
Ray Bradbury, the man who could write one short story per day!
…Not anymore.
But allow me to back up a bit.
I have always had an agent. When I started in the business, you absolutely needed an agent to get published. The system was still based on the “query and wait” procedure that had been around for nearly a century.
It was a grueling and often heartbreaking way to live. It could drive a weaker man to drink.
But all that changed with the indie revolution where a writer could put out as much good content as was humanly possible for him or her, and get it to market within weeks, days, or even moments without having to wait on an agent.
Because of indie publishing, I’m able to make a living that would not exist were I to stick exclusively to the traditional way of doing things (I’m a hybrid author).
Do I still have an agent?
Yes I do, and I will continue to do so. Agents can shop for movie, TV, and foreign rights on your behalf. And they are in your court, should a legal problem arise.
But are they absolutely necessary?
Un-Uh….
PS. Neither is writing school (but I’ll save that for another day).
