Why did the cops appear to be coming at me? Or why did they appear to be coming for me?

When they pulled up directly behind me, their rooftop and front grill flashers reflecting bright in my rearview and side mirrors, I knew I wasn’t going anywhere fast. As they killed the sirens, it became apparent there was no way I’d be backing out. They had me trapped. My heart continued to race, but for different reasons this time.

One of the cops slipped out from behind his driver’s seat, opened the cruiser door and approached me. I rolled down my window. His big, blue uniformed frame filled up the entire window.

“What’s the problem, Officer?” I said, as nonthreatening as possible.

I tried to plant a smile on my face, but it was impossible.

“License and registration please,” he said, deadpan.

“I haven’t even left the parking lot,” I said. “Is this about a traffic violation?”

“License and registration,” he said again. This time, like he meant it.
