FEAR!
Mike Tyson once said this about fear: “Fear is the greatest obstacle to learning. But fear is your best friend. Fear is like fire. If you learn to control it, you let it work for you. If you don’t learn to control it, it’ll destroy you and everything around you.”
Too many writers are afraid to let their work go out into the big bad world for fear of rejection, or ridicule, or poor sales, or poor reviews. It’s like not getting on a plane because there’s at least a .005 percent chance you’re gonna crash and burn.
But those of us who have confidence in our stories and novels, have not only overcome this fear, we’ve learned to control it. We don’t over edit our work, nor do we trust an editor’s criticism or suggested alterations at face value. We stick to the story we wanted to write in the first place, for better or for worse.
If you wish to be prolific in this new marketplace where you can bypass the gatekeepers and get your work out to your readers in a relative instant, you need to control your fear, or your career will crash and burn before it even gets off the ground.
