Don't Be a Writer
Dear Reader,
Perhaps the subtitle for this one should be “Be Yourself.”
Too many writers try their hardest to be, ummm writers. They write what they believe they should be writing. They labor over their material right down to the sentence and word choice, and agonize over the writing process.
Writers, especially literary writers, work so slowly that they are lucky to produce a novel every five years. Maybe they’ll write a short story in between that takes them a year or more to write. And it will bore the pants off you.
My advice is this. Don’t be a writer, so much as, just be yourself.
Put your personality into your words. Write prose that you love to read, and by extension, watch on the screen. Have fun.
If you’re not laughing at your own jokes, or feeling your brow sweat from the excitement you’re putting down on the page, you’re not being yourself. You’re being a writer.
Being yourself is much more fun than being a writer.
