Don Juan Juarez lies on his back in his king-sized bed. His century-old home is built entirely of stone quarried and shipped downstate from the Adirondack Mountains. Not that he’s ever given the construction of his New York headquarters much thought, so long as it was as durable as a castle, and occupied one entire street corner of a downtown that’s been growing increasingly more dangerous what with the almost nightly shootouts between the Venezuelan, MS-13, and his own Jaurez competing drug gangs.

He listens to the occasional gunshots. Somehow, he feels the bullets as if they are piercing his skin and flesh, shattering his bones, puncturing his organs. A part of him…a big part…wish they were. He can’t escape the image of his young, handsome son being cut down only feet away from the front door of his namesake, inner-city castle. Nurse Melissa Shannon, who is naked and exhausted from their lovemaking, rests her head lovingly on his bare chest.
