9/11 God Bless America
It’s the 2oth anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center. This always comes with mixed feelings while on one hand, I pray for all those brave police officers, fire fighters, and rescue professionals who ran into the buildings to die and for all those tower workers who found themselves with the choice of either burning to death or jumping, I see the fight against terror still very much real and a generational struggle.
While I agree that exiting Afghanistan was the correct move (we should have gotten out once we got Bin Laden, but that’s debatable), I always thought we should have left a residual force just to back up the Afghan army and in general to keep the peace.
But who am I to say?
Here’s what I do know:
I remember 9/11 like it was was yesterday like many of you do. I was just back from an assignment in Istanbul and about to fly to DC (on behalf of the same assignment).
Of course the flight was canceled. I spent most of the day trying to sign up for the armed services, but I’d just turned 37 a few weeks earlier and at the time, 36 was the cut off.
But as a freelance writer and journalist, I followed the battles that ensued, closely.
I hope you take some time out today to remember the dead and to honor those who continue to make us safe, so that we don’t always need to think about terrorism and/or another terroristic event like 9/11.
God bless America!
